"Eliminate regrets in your closet by learning
what flatters your body-type!"
what flatters your body-type!"
“For many years my wife has been putting off getting new clothes. Christmases and birthdays have gone by where she would receive money from me and others that had been specifically earmarked for new clothes. As the years went by her clothes just kept getting older and older. There was always some kind of excuse or something else that she saw as more important than buying herself clothes. I finally had had enough and decided to get her a gift certificate to work with Alicia. My wife was grateful for the gift, but kept on making excuses why she wouldn’t use it. I had had enough.
Clothing has a huge effect on a woman and how she feels about herself and I was ready for my wife to see the beauty in herself that I have seen our entire marriage. I sent Alicia an email, copying my wife, and asked her to setup an appointment and I was going to make sure that my wife was available.
The day came, and I decided I was going to join them for the “going through the closet” portion. So I sat at the doorway to offer my assistance. My wife would try something on and then Alicia would tell her the things that were good about the item and then gently tell her why the item was not good for her. My wife began to understand why she felt good in some clothes and hated others. It was nothing like that cable TV show where the hosts ridicule the unsuspecting makeover victim.
Alicia started to collect the “no go” items. As a small pile started up, I decided to go and get some bags to put the clothes in. When my wife would hesitate with an item, I would kindly reach out my hand and take it from her and put it in the bag, reassuring her that she deserves to be the star and have some new clothes. Alicia patiently listened to some of the emotional reasons my wife gave for her clothing choices, but knew just how to help her see herself less critically.
She helped my wife to concentrate on how to highlight her assets, instead of dwelling on her frustrations with her body. Alicia also “found” other items in the closet that my wife had forgotten about and showed her new ways to wear them and be excited about them again.
I really had no idea how bad things were until we were done and saw the pile of clothes. I gave her a big hug and told her to go shopping while I tended the kids. I had complete faith in Alicia.
A few hours later my wife walked in the door with shopping bags. The best thing was that she came home with an enormous smile on her face and a new confidence. She had finally seen herself as beautiful; it’s sinking in.
To keep my wife’s special day going, I had already arranged for a baby sitter for that evening. We went out to dinner and then hit the stores. It was a little strange because I really don’t usually care for shopping much, but this time I was having fun. Hurray, another victory! We left the store with another bag of goodies.
At the end of the day I reflected on what had just happened. My wife was happy, she looked REALLY GOOD (I couldn’t keep my hands off her), and her closet had begun its transformation. No more wearing something out of guilt just because they had already been purchased, even though she didn’t like it, no more worn clothes with holes in them, no more baggy non-fitting clothes. The biggest takeaway from the day was now my wife had a level of knowledge of what to buy and how to buy. It was clear that one of Alicia’s goals was to teach my wife how to do this for herself.
Alicia is fantastic. Very gently helping my wife see that she could dress very well and she didn’t have to spend a fortune and how not to dwell upon her body frustrations. I was surprised to hear that they had gone shopping not just at high-end stores, but discount stores and Alicia would head to the clearance racks first. She truly tries to buy things at the best price and was teaching my wife how to do that.
Thanks Alicia for everything! You made a huge difference in how my wife sees herself.”

"What is a Wardrobe and Closet Inventory? This is exactly what the other women at the table asked me when I bid on this item. Most of these women thought it was some sort of closet organization company or service.
I was recently at a charity auction where Alicia from Chic on a Shoestring had donated her Wardrobe and Closet Inventory. I had heard Alicia on the radio and seen Alicia on TV and for years so I knew exactly what it was. Unfortunately when I told these others at the table they started to bid against me, but I still won.
Even though I was excited for what I won and for Alicia to come over and work with me, after these two hours of one-on-one time in my closet, it far exceeded my expectations. It was truly an education and when she left I had a list in my hand what I needed to buy to pull many items that were already in my closet into complete outfits. But maybe even more important, I had a much better idea of what not to buy.
She explained to me why certain things look good on me and my body-type and why other things don't. She also showed me the little changes I could make to feel more feminine, but within my comfort zone.
I am now excited to go shopping, which I'm usually not, and much more confident that I won't be wasting money on pieces that I'll wear just a couple times.
I now understand what she means by building in a core wardrobe that fits my lifestyle. And I was very surprised when she didn't instruct me to go to the most expensive store in town; she showed me how to identify these items at the stores where I already shop.
Thank you, thank you Alicia! It was a pleasure to meet you, those two hours went by so fast. I feel like I learned so much and now have the tools to be a much better shopper."
A week letter she followed up:
"I went shopping and had fun looking at items I had previously avoided and bought much needed updated items. Our meeting was great and it gave me confidence I needed to put together a better wardrobe. I now feel like I know what to shop for! Thanks!"

"Once upon a time, I did not know how to dress myself. I mean, technically, I could do it. I could do buttons, I could do zippers, you know. But I never felt like I looked “put together” or “cute” or “stylish” or what have you.
Then my husband got me a Christmas present. It was a closet inventory and 2 hours of shopping with Alicia Richmond, fashion consultant for Good Things Utah and stylist of Chic on a Shoestring. It helped that Alicia was already a friend of ours, (she is the nicest person!) and what I told my husband was - “I want a couple of sweaters for Christmas. Go ask Alicia where to buy them, and what kind to get. I don’t trust you to pick them out.” I did get some great sweaters, but what he got me was so much more.
I am not kidding you when I say that after that, I felt like I had been on “What Not to Wear” but without the insults or the $5,000. (Or, sadly, enough, the hair and make-up people. Nick and Carmindy are geniuses.) I now KNEW what kind of clothes to buy, and WHY, and she pulled combinations I never would have thought, and I honestly thought I could never shop without her again.
But I did shop without her, and I was SUCCESSFUL. It’s awesome. Truly. She taught me why certain things look better on me than other things.
She also did a “Balance Your Body Type” analysis on me, and that is why I can now shop for myself. Because I know what to buy. I know what to camouflage, what to accentuate. I know why V necks are good on me, and anything that pads the shoulders or widens them must be avoided!!! (It’s all about balancing the shoulders and hips, apparently. Did I know that? Um, yeah, totally…..) Yes, I still have the analysis in my email. I still look at it often.
I am telling you, I no longer look like a teenage boy or a moron when I leave the house. You know, unless it’s one of those days where sweats is all I’m going to wear, and that’s just how it is. And I often do just wear jeans and T-shirts. But the magical thing is, those jeans and tees, they FIT NOW. And I know I can put an outfit together when I want to, and it doesn’t intimidate me in the least. And that is huge for me.
Also, I now do most of my shopping at consignment stores or Target. I don’t spend a ton, and Alicia is so aware of budgets."

"I recently hosted a Closet Confession for my family and friends. All the women who came to the party not only had fun, but felt more confident and motivated to be more positive about dressing their body type! I myself felt a lot of excitement to get out there and do some shopping, which is not something I generally feel enjoyment from. It was great to bond with my friends while comparing notes about styles, trends and fit in our shopping struggles. We all laughed and it was a lot of fun for everyone who came. One of my friends said as she left, "That was probably the most valuable party I've ever been to. No one was selling me anything and I left with more knowledge about how I look in my clothes than I ever knew before."
It truly was great and everyone left here feeling happy and positive. You are great at what you do! Thanks again."

"You did a Wardrobe and Closet consultation and Personal Shopping for me about a year ago. I really enjoyed that service and still enjoy the items I purchased on our shopping trip. I try to utilize what you taught me, but it was so much I couldn't soak it all in and feel like I need a refresher. I still feel inept at putting things together and just don't have the knack for it that you do.
I am on your email list and for me the most exciting new service you're offering is the group shopping. In fact, I just purchased a group shopping session and can't wait for the opportunity to get together again with you and other ladies. I have often thought about e-mailing you and asking you if you would ever be interested in putting together group shopping locally and offer a lower price than the one-on-one consultation. The personal consultation was great and I'll be doing it again, but the group shopping would make it more affordable to get the benefit of your expertise more often. I could see myself doing this 2 or 3 times a year."

"I wanted to let you know how much fun it was to shop with you last week. I have been telling everyone how much fun I had shopping. It's usually very painful and takes much more time than 2 hours. It was hard to decide what to actually buy so I bought just about everything and I've been slowly contemplating them while they are in my closet. I've had a lot of fun wearing my little numbers and they make me feel wonderful. So THANK YOU very much for helping to empower me in my future fashion decisions."
