Thoughts of a Husband
Shop your OWN closet and learn what works best for your body-type.
“For many years my wife has been putting off getting new clothes. Christmases and birthdays have gone by where she would receive money from me and others that had been specifically earmarked for new clothes. As the years went by her clothes just kept getting older and older. There was always some kind of excuse or something else that she saw as more important than buying herself clothes. I finally had had enough and decided to get her a gift certificate to work with Alicia. My wife was grateful for the gift, but kept on making excuses why she wouldn’t use it. I had had enough.
Clothing has a huge effect on a woman and how she feels about herself and I was ready for my wife to see the beauty in herself that I have seen our entire marriage. I sent Alicia an email, copying my wife, and asked her to setup an appointment and I was going to make sure that my wife was available.
The day came, and I decided I was going to join them for the “going through the closet” portion. So I sat at the doorway to offer my assistance. My wife would try something on and then Alicia would tell her the things that were good about the item and then gently tell her why the item was not good for her. My wife began to understand why she felt good in some clothes and hated others. It was nothing like that cable TV show where the hosts ridicule the unsuspecting makeover victim.
Alicia started to collect the “no go” items. As a small pile started up, I decided to go and get some bags to put the clothes in. When my wife would hesitate with an item, I would kindly reach out my hand and take it from her and put it in the bag, reassuring her that she deserves to be the star and have some new clothes. Alicia patiently listened to some of the emotional reasons my wife gave for her clothing choices, but knew just how to help her see herself less critically.
She helped my wife to concentrate on how to highlight her assets, instead of dwelling on her frustrations with her body. Alicia also “found” other items in the closet that my wife had forgotten about and showed her new ways to wear them and be excited about them again.
I really had no idea how bad things were until we were done and saw the pile of clothes. I gave her a big hug and told her to go shopping while I tended the kids. I had complete faith in Alicia.
A few hours later my wife walked in the door with shopping bags. The best thing was that she came home with an enormous smile on her face and a new confidence. She had finally seen herself as beautiful; it’s sinking in.
To keep my wife’s special day going, I had already arranged for a baby sitter for that evening. We went out to dinner and then hit the stores. It was a little strange because I really don’t usually care for shopping much, but this time I was having fun. Hurray, another victory! We left the store with another bag of goodies.
At the end of the day I reflected on what had just happened. My wife was happy, she looked REALLY GOOD (I couldn’t keep my hands off her), and her closet had begun its transformation. No more wearing something out of guilt just because they had already been purchased, even though she didn’t like it, no more worn clothes with holes in them, no more baggy non-fitting clothes. The biggest takeaway from the day was now my wife had a level of knowledge of what to buy and how to buy. It was clear that one of Alicia’s goals was to teach my wife how to do this for herself.
Alicia is fantastic. Very gently helping my wife see that she could dress very well and she didn’t have to spend a fortune and how not to dwell upon her body frustrations. I was surprised to hear that they had gone shopping not just at high-end stores, but discount stores and Alicia would head to the clearance racks first. She truly tries to buy things at the best price and was teaching my wife how to do that.
Thanks Alicia for everything! You made a huge difference in how my wife sees herself.”
